As a reader, I am sometimes a bit skeptical about the products people recommend to their readers. This is a post to show that with me, you will get recommendations for products I actually have. I honestly can’t stand leaving the house to shop (unless it’s for shoes or books), so I buy a ton of stuff online (mostly from amazon, honestly, especially when it comes to buying stuff for Oliver).
Pet stores are always too loud and crowded for me, and they always smell like hamster poop. It’s just not ideal for me. I tried to bring Oliver with me once, and he HATED it. He was panting and meowing the entire car ride. Then when we got to the pet store, I discovered that it was dog adoption day, adding to the Poopie Panic*. Oliver does not like dogs.
One of my family’s dogs LOVES Oliver. He will search for him days after he’s been over. He loves to sniff and lick him. Probably because Oliver is way nicer than my family’s cat. Oliver does not like the dog at all though. He hides from him the entire time.
Anyway. At the pet store, Oliver hopped through the leg hole of the child seat in the cart and crawled under one of the isles (I did have him on a harness & leash in case something like this happened). I had to pull him out by the scruff of his neck. We haven’t been back to the pet store together since. Here are the leash and harness I have for him. Even though it seems kind of weird to have a leash and harness for him, Oliver is a very strong cat, and I have used the leash and harness more times than I thought I would, especially considering I bought it so I could take him on walks before finding out that is does not like to go outside. Here is a link to the tag I put on his collar and the most beautiful collar that I got him that he hated. Oliver is not a collar cat.

Probably 90% of the things that I buy for Oliver come from Amazon. I love that I can read reviews on the items before I buy them and that I can leave reviews. I also love that I don’t have to leave my house which is a huge bonus. Oh, Oliver is out of food? Boom. Ordered. At my door in two days. So here is my post of cat recommendation items from Amazon.
|Flamingo number one. This photo was taken a day or so after we got Oliver.|
The day before I got Oliver, I made a pet store run. I bought a couple toys for him. This flamingo was his favorite by far. The first flamingo was murdered in a week, and I had to get him another one because he loved the first so much. I found them on Amazon. They have three different styles, but they send you a random one. I ordered three in the hopes that one would be a flamingo. I lucked out and ended up getting two flamingos. The other ones are still super cute, but I wanted to make sure that Oliver got the same toy as before. He’s a very smart boy and would probably notice the difference. He loves that flamingo so much. It’s the cutest thing. He pulled it off the stick, and he carries it around the house, meowing loudly with it in his mouth.

I’ve bought Oliver a variety of other not so cheap toys and there is only one other toy that he loves anywhere close to as much as that flamingo. They are known in our house as puff balls. I bought this pack of 100 of them. They are all over our house. He loves to play fetch with them. Me roommate’s new kitten also likes them. Though she doesn’t play fetch.
Edit: I just remembered a toy that he also loved a ton. I have no idea where he put them which is why I forgot about them, but these catnip teabags are adorable and Oliver approved.
On the topic of playtime, we also got a huge thing of catnip from amazon. Oliver loves the ‘nip. He will actually tip the box over if you leave it out, so we keep it in a cabinet. Sometimes for added giggles, we put it on his favorite scratcher. This one was actually a much better price than the scratch pads at the pet store, and Oliver loves the incline. There’s also a toy inside… not in ours because Oliver ripped it out, but if you order one, there will be a shiny ball hanging inside for your kitty to play with.
Via my vet’s recommendation, Oliver eats mostly wet food. He is a spoiled kitty, so I buy him the expensive kitty food. I say expensive, but honestly, it’s really not too bad when you buy it in bulk from Amazon. It’s cheaper than buying it a can at the time at the pet store. Oliver only eats Hill’s Science Diet. I have not found a lower price than Amazon for this. He gets 1/2 can for breakfast and 1/2 can for dinner. Usually a different flavor for each meal. His favorites are the tuna chunks and the savory chicken.
The tuna does not stay on a plate well because it is chunks and gravy and Oliver is not a very dainty eater, so I got him these bowls for it. He doesn’t really like to eat out of normal pet food bowls as they touch his whiskers too much, so these work great because they’re wide and shallow. Honestly though, he makes a mess no matter what, so I got him this fish-shaped food tray. It’s really easy to wipe off even if the food gets in the grooves, and it protects our floors. I’ve seen them at other kitty owner houses too, so it’s multiple household approved! Plus it comes in one of my favorite colors which is always a bonus.

|Oliver is more playful than the new kitten, and she likes to hide from him. Though under his foraging food bowl is probably not the best hiding spot. Oliver has gotten very good at the bowl even with me sticking it in a table and on top of a chair. I’m convinced he’s a genius.|
Edit: We now have three cats, and we still use this litter. I love that it doesn’t smell like chemicals. Oliver doesn’t smell like harsh chemicals, and all the cats seem to be cool with this litter. It does a great job of not making our house smell like a litter box. It’s comparable in price to other litter brands. The only downside I’d say is that it comes in a bag, not a box, so it’s a little odd shaped to store. You could always pour it into a food storage container if you really wanted to. This one has a spout, so it’d probably be a really great one for it. I think I just convinced myself to buy it with that last sentence.
While we’re on the topic of litter boxes: I got the litter box that Oliver uses from Amazon. Oliver is a digger and will fling litter everywhere without these high walls. They also keep him from jumping over the sides so he actually walks on the litter mat. As is, we still had to get the huge litter mat because he leaps out of the box. This litter mat seems pretty good. It had some of the best reviews. Other than installing self-vacuuming floors, I don’t know if there’s any way to completely eliminate the spread of litter around the house, but this does a much better job than any of the other litter mats we had. While not necessary, I also have a litter genie for him. It’s awesome. I haven’t bought a bag refill in a while cause I didn’t want to spend the money and my boyfriend is fine with using grocery bags, but it still works great, just open the bottom part. It’s nice because that way we can clean the box every day without wasting bags, and then we just dispose of the bags when they’re full. I will say that the nice thing about the litter genie bags is that they were well sealed which grocery bags are not, but frugalness has its price and you have to be willing to pay it.
Other Amazon items we use for/on Oliver:
Nail clippers – He hates having his nails cut, but my furniture and my body thank me.
Flea brush – He also hates this, but sometimes it’s unavoidable. I don’t think he hates the brush as much as I hate having fleas in my rug, so mommy wins and he has to deal.
Kennel – This is one of the best kennels I’ve found. It’s a great price, and it has a nice amount of space for Oliver to move around in. My favorite part is that it has a top door and a front door. The top door makes it super easy to put him in there. It’s not an item that you’ll use a lot, but you’ll thank yourself for the investment when it comes time to use it. Oliver is a bigger cat because he is part siamese, so I got the larger size. Realistically, I could probably fit two Olivers in it, but I’m sure he appreciates the extra space when we have to sit at the vet’s office or in the car. The handle is also especially great. I have experience with some other cat carriers with absolutely terrible handles, metaly things that will make your hands ache. Like I said, you won’t have to use it much, but you’ll thank yourself when you do.
One last thing I find essential as Oliver’s mommy: Earplugs . While not the most comfortable thing in the world to sleep in, sometimes Oliver just doesn’t understand the meaning of, “it’s three AM.”
You’ll notice that I didn’t include any cat beds on this list. Don’t bother. They won’t sleep in them. May I suggest the cardboard box from Amazon with a blanket or fabric in it? They’ll love it.
Shop smartly, and remember your cat is watching you:
Have any cat item recommendations for me to check out? I love to spoil this little guy. Leave ’em in the comments!
*Poopie panic: Poopie is what we call Oliver. Poopie Panic is what Oliver does when he’s in a situation he doesn’t want to be in, i.e. Mommy holding him, getting a bath, or being in the car. He will be completely calm and then he will suddenly lose his mind. He squirms and starts making noises that sound like he’s being tortured.
